Why swimming may be the best exercise as you age

Falling down and getting hurt is a big problem for older adults, and researchers think that physical activity may lower people’s risk of falls. But now, a new study suggests that the only type of exercise that lowers older adults’ risk of falls is swimming.
Researchers in Australia looked at about 1,700 men age 70 and older, and compared the types of exercise they did with their likelihood of experiencing a fall over a four-year period. There were nearly 2,700 falls during the study.
The 88 men in the study who swam were 33 percent less likely to fall compared with all other men in the study. In contrast, men who did other forms of exercise — including golfing, doing calisthenics, working out on treadmills or stationary bikes — were no less likely to fall, the researchers found.
“Unlike [with] land-based sports, swimmers are required to create their own base of support and, at the same time, to produce a coordinated movement of both upper and lower extremities,” said study author Dafna Merom, an associate professor of physical activity and health at the University of Western Sydney.

The researchers also found that the swimmers did better on a test of “postural sway,” compared with the average of all men in the study. In this test of standing balance, a person is asked to stand as still as possible for 30 seconds, and researchers measure how much his or her body moves at the waist level.
Falling is a major problem for older adults. Some falls can cause broken bones, head trauma and other severe injuries, but even less serious falls can lower people’s mobility while they are recovering and lead to other problems. Among U.S. adults 65 and older, one in three experience a fall in a given year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The new study is the first to compare various types of physical activity for their ability to prevent falls, the researchers said. Further studies are needed to confirm the findings, Merom said.
The most common form of exercise that older adults engage in is walking, but studies have shown that walking does not lower the risk of falls, the researchers said in their study, which was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
The researchers asked the men what types of physical activity they had done in the past week; they followed up with phone calls every four months to ask the men if they had fallen and, if so, how many times. The men were also given tests that measured their walking speed and balance. The men were all living in communities in suburban Sydney and not in nursing homes.
Any sort of body movement requires balance, Merom said. The question the researchers wanted to look at is whether some forms of physical activity might provide an advantage when people need a quick neuromuscular response to regain their balance.
Although the study included only men, it is likely that swimming also lowers women’s risk of falls, Merom said. “I would expect it will work even better for women,” given that women generally have less muscle strength than men, she said.
The results show a link, but not a cause-and-effect relationship, between swimming and a lower risk of falls, Merom noted. For example, it could be that men with good leg strength and control of their posture are more likely than others to participate in swimming.
There is reason to think that swimming does work to prevent falls, she said. Swimming develops strong and stable core muscles, which are necessary for good balance control — a major protective factor against falls.
The data suggested that cyclists may also have a lower risk of falls, but there were too few cyclists in the study for the researchers to know for sure whether there was an effect, Merom said.
Different types of physical activity may benefit people in different ways, she said. For example, dancing may help with gait speed and reaction time.
“My view is that as people age, they should select and regularly participate in complex motor activities, and not only in functional walking,” she said.

Hot Tub Review From Satisfied Spa Customer in New England

Dear Crocker Sales Management Team,
It is with great pleasure that I write to you to acknowledge what an incredible experience it was to purchase a new spa from Mike Peters. My wife and I attended the sale event at the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington back in early April. We were killing time that Sunday afternoon and stopped by the event out of curiosity. We had no intention of purchasing a spa. Then we met Mike.
We quickly explained to him that we had no interest in a spa and that we were simply being nosey. We had never considered buying a spa before and immediately dismissed the reality of it because we hadn’t done any research, nor did we have the budget for one. We also had no idea where we would place a spa on our property, and to consider doing so, we would have to do some extensive landscaping.
As we looked at the Artesian Pelican Bay model, my wife commented that IF we were to ever consider buying a spa, that it would have to be that one. In addition to speaking to Mike, we also had an incredibly informative and non-sales-like discussion with a gentleman (I have forgotten his name) who trains all of the field technicians.
Our day-dreaming ended quickly and we left the event and headed home. Once home, we continued to talk about the Pelican Bay model and ventured outside to joke about where it might sit. An hour later we were back in the car and headed back to see Mike. We purchased the spa on the spot, probably the last sale of the event.
Our fondness and gratitude toward Mike only began that day. From then on, through the process of planning for delivery and prepping the location and electrical feed, I communicated with Mike repeatedly. Each time he responded immediately in a caring and professional manner, never leaving a question unanswered or a concern unaddressed.
On the delivery day, luck was with us as the delivery team was under-staffed and both Mike iews boston, hot tub eviewsvand a store manager (I think his name was Lou) were on the scene. The delivery site made it difficult to maneuver the spa, yet the process of getting it situated went extremely well. The third young man that assisted with the delivery was also a pleasure to meet and he did an excellent job.
Mike had promised to come back to make a site visit to demonstrate how to operate the spa and teach us about the chemical applications. Again, he was incredibly professional, unbelievably knowledgeable, and communicated in such a way that he made us feel very comfortable, completely satisfied, and thrilled about our whimsical purchase. Over the first couple of weeks I reached out to Mike with several more questions and again he responded immediately and provided quick and informative answers.
From step A to Z in the process, Mike was phenomenal. If not for him, we would not have purchased the spa.
Thank you for what we hope continues to be an awesome experience!
Sincerely,

Mark Mauriello
